Statement of the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) during the Stock-taking Event, Bonn Climate Conference SB44

May 21st 2016

Madam President, Chairs of SBs,

The IIPFCC would like to reiterate the need for maintaining the momentum created by the adoption and unprecedented signing of the Paris Agreement by parties.

We take note of the progress being made in the various streams of negotiations ongoing in this session and urge for further promotion of a consultative and transparent process going forward.

We note the reference to observers including Indigenous peoples’ engagement reiterated by the European Union in the deliberations under the Ad hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA) and encourage other parties and groups to continue enhancing our participation as not only a constituency of the UNFCCC process but as stewards of combatting climate change.

It is our hope and aspirations that the spirit and letter of the Paris Agreement especially on the reference to indigenous peoples’ rights is kept alive in the current conference as well as in the subsequent meetings that will be critical in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

We call upon the parties to ensure coherence in the implementation of the work programme in the coming into force of the Paris Agreement and the modalities of implementation under discussion here in Bonn and most adeptly in the forthcoming COP22 in Marrakech in Morocco in regards to the APA.

Our appreciation to the organizers of this stock taking event.

We thank you Madam President.
