International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) IIPFCC Statement in the opening of the 41st Session of SBSTA in Peru, Lima

The REDD+ countries must respect the self-selection process of indigenous peoples and implement Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to ensure their representation in all the relevant REDD+ bodies at local, national, regional and international levels.  We consider large-scale agriculture, hydroelectric, plantation, mining, mega dams, infrastructures and logging as the real drivers of deforestations.

We also demand additional guidance on safeguards information system (SIS). Parties should not take it as an imposition but recognize safeguards as an opportunity to strengthen the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities. We call on SBSTA to ensure that the following information be included in the safeguard information system:

Chairperson, we thank you for your attention and we assure you that we the indigenous peoples of the world are your allies in protecting the Earth and wellbeing of all living creatures.
